We love to hear news about youth being involved with the environment. Here’s one from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP):
Nairobi 24 August 2007 – More than 180 young people from 85 countries around the world will meet in Germany later this week to discuss ways in which technology can be used to promote environmental protection. ‘Technology in service of the environment’ is the theme of the third Tunza International Youth Conference, organized by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in Leverkusen, Germany, from 26 to 30 August 2007. What is the Chipko movement?

The Chipko movement is a non-violent movement started by Indian villagers in the 1970s and 1980s, to protest against the destruction of trees and forests, which were important resources that they depend on. The movement started in the Chamoli district in 1973 and spread throughout India. Chipko activists would protest against the cutting down of trees by hugging them and preventing the workers from doing their job. This action represents the name of the movement as Chipko means “embrace”. They are probably Asia’s first treehuggers. Read more
Who is Pan Yue?

We would describe Pan Yue as the new green voice of China while UK magazine, New Statesman, calls him “Person of the Year” and Chinese newspaper, Southern Weekend, calls him “Hurricane Pan”. Pan Yue is an outspoken person who speaks and debates on environmental issues, and who also happens to be the Vice Minister of China’s State Environmental Protection Administration, the country’s environmental watchdog. He has working experience as a journalist and editor before becoming a government official. Read more
