Clean and Green Singapore Jamboree

The Clean and Green Singapore Jamboree event was held at Bishan Park yesterday. Jamboree means noisy celebration and we saw some of that especially at the games area. There were the usual exhibits and booths by the various government agencies, volunteer groups and companies. We found some interesting stuff at the event:

Bike to work: iwant2bike2work encouraging cyclists to ride their bikes to work.

Hybrid cars: Check out the Toyata Prius and Honda Civic Hybrid (nothing new but we always get excited about hybrids).

Electricity consumption meters: Monitor your home electricity consumption and cost through ETrack.

Plant-A-Tree Programme: Plant your own tree or donate a tree for $200, brought to you by the Garden City Fund.

Energy Efficiency Programme Office: A multi-agency taskforce to enhance energy efficiency across major sectors of energy use. Members include the National Environment Agency (NEA), Energy Market Authority (EMA), Economic Development Board (EDB), Building and Construction Authority (BCA), Land Transport Authority (LTA) and Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*Star).

Community In Bloom Programme: The National Parks Board (NParks) promoting a gardening culture and encouraging the public to take up community gardening.

Green Culture Singapore: A gardening website and discussion forum for plant-lovers.

In the evening, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong spoke at the launch of the event and Channel NewsAsia reported his views that “Singapore will do its part to mitigate climate change but the country cannot afford to do so at the cost of its economic growth.” We are not convinced that this typical ‘environment is important but economy comes first’ view by most governments would help to create a sustainable future.
