Green efforts of Korea

At AsiaIsGreen, we are fans of Korea’s green efforts. So we are delighted when The Sunday Times published an article, Koreans trash the waste problem, which gave an insightful introduction to recycling in Korea.
We are most impressed with the recycling in restaurants and fast food outlets. Plastic containers and cups are replaced with paper products to facilitate recycling, and the restaurants can be fined if they do not recycle more than 90% of their used paper containers. Check out The Daily Kimchi for photos of sorting and recycling initiatives in restaurants.
The overall green efforts by the Ministry of Environment in Korea are quite impressive. An overview of the policies on waste and recycling by the Ministry of Environment is available in this link. Or learn more about the status of the environment in the Green Korea 2006 report. One of their notable efforts is the setting up of the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) System. Quoting from the Green Korea 2006 report:
The SEA is a support tool for systematic decision making, integratedly considering environmental impact, together with the economic and social impacts when setting up the administrative planning (policy development, planning and programs implementation). The key factors are as follows: 1) The SEA is applied to administrative planning; 2) The analysis concerning diverse alternatives and their impact on environment are carried out; 3) The opinions of residents are taken into account.
The SEA system is a good tool for the sustainable development of a country and should be implemented together with the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for individual projects.
