China’s Ecocities

There are currently several projects in China to build ecocities. An ecocity is a city that balances social, economic and environmental factors to achieve sustainable development.
Arup is building an ecocity at Dongtan, near Shanghai. Some features include 100% renewable energy generation, electric and hydrogen-powered cars, organic farming, etc. Read more at the Arup website or at the Wired magazine.
William McDonough is building an ecocity at Huangbaiyu, a north-eastern region in China. Some features include roof gardens, solar panels, eco-bricks, etc. Read more at the Popular Science magazine or at Newsweek.
GTZ is building ecocities in Yangzhou and Changzhou under the Eco City Planning and Management Programme. The programme’s core focal areas include: Eco City Development; Sustainable Urban Conservation; Eco Residential Development; Urban Water Management; Industrial Environmental Management; and Public Participation.
Singapore is also in talks with China to build an ecocity. Read more at the Channel NewsAsia website.
